Character Name: Simon Jarrett (Simon-3)
Age: 26
Canon: SOMA
Canon Point: After launching the ARK
Character Information:

Here!

The wiki is a little long, so I'll summarize the main points below:

- The year is 2104.
- Most of humanity was wiped out by an asteroid. The only survivors are an underwater research team who were also (coincidentally) studying how to transfer human consciousness.
- Simon Jarrett, a dead man from 2015, had his consciousness mistakenly uploaded into a computer chip by a malfunctioning AI. That computer chip was then shoved into a corpse.
- The malfunctioning AI made a bunch of other robots and corpse monsters, and they're not always friendly.
- Simon and Catherine (also a researcher, also dead) are trying to reach the ARK, a digital paradise where they can upload their consciousness and finally leave this underwater hell.

Unfortunately, the ARK only copies a person's consciousness, so no matter what our protagonists do, they're doomed to remain at the bottom of the ocean. Catherine knows this. Simon doesn't.

Personality:

the first simon;
cw: brain damage, car accidents

The real Simon died in 2015 due to complications from a car accident. He was an avid reader who kept books by his bedside table and regularly attended literature festivals. This creativity was further highlighted by his job at a bookstore (where he seemed to thrive), numerous film posters, and a propensity to doodle in the margins of his notes. Like many creatives, he was also somewhat scatter-brained: he forgot to hit "send" on emails, kept medical supplies in random cabinets, and had no less than four junk drawers. (When his doctor contacted him about a medication he needed to take before the brain scan, he reassured him that he's sure he has it... somewhere.)

We first meet this Simon several weeks after a car accident that left him with persistent brain bleeding. Within a month, he was dead.

Shortly before his death, Simon promised his brain scan to a graduate student, asking him to use it to further his research. At least that way, he said, his life would mean something. That graduate student later went on to pioneer the neurograph, a brain scan that enables a person's consciousness to be stored and copied.

the next simon;

This new Simon (also known as Simon-2) is what happens when you shove said neurograph into another person's corpse and refuse to tell it what's happening. He has the same personality and memories as the original Simon -- in fact, his consciousness is continuous, so he doesn't even realize he's no longer living. Because of his stubborn ability to deceive himself, he imagines that he still has skin, working lungs, and even the clothing he wore as his former self. It's not until he's forced underwater that his perspective shifts, allowing him to finally see himself as the weird, robotic corpse that he is. Even then, he still clings to his humanity like a shield, telling Catherine's that he's "the only human left" without a trace of irony.

This self-deception is necessary for his survival -- throughout most of the game, he refuses to let himself break down or give up, at one point volunteering to walk miles across the ocean floor if it would save him and Catherine. He is incredibly driven, but only because he's able to convince himself there's a solution to every problem. His determination (and propensity to delude himself) keeps him from thinking too hard about the size of the ocean ("how big can this ocean be?"), the survivability of his predicament, or what will happen to his current body if he successfully clones his consciousness yet again. He propels himself forward with a blind desire to survive, regardless of the challenges. Simon's bravery cannot be overstated. He is caught in a terrifying world where death lurks behind every corner, yet he always moves forward, sometimes literally staring down monsters to keep them from attacking him. He gets frightened, but he never panics. He hesitates, but never stops.

simon and the other robots;

Throughout his time in Pathos-II, Simon encounters dozens of other robots, most of whom are caught in a similar delusional delirium as him. These robots believe that they are completely human in spite of their sparking, metal parts, and will go to great lengths to argue this fact. Even before Simon realized he was in the same position as them, he treats these robots with compassion, asking them if they're doing okay and offering to find help. This compassion also extends to the humans he encounters at the station -- for instance, he sits quietly with a woman who asks him to comfort her during her last moments, even though he could just as easily leave her alone to die. He has a soft, gentle way of speaking, and tends to go out of his way to help others.

In spite of his kindness, however, there are multiple, unavoidable times when he needs to kill another robot to survive. In the beginning of the game, it's easy for Simon (and the player) to convince themselves that killing a robot is no different from unplugging your hair dryer. It soon becomes obvious that the robots are just as sentient as you are. When they're removed from power, they shriek. They scream in agony. They cry. Simon is as gentle as possible when he kills them, but he does kill them, believing that his own life is worth saving over theirs. That being said, he's wracked with survivor's guilt, oftentimes questioning what makes him special ("They're just robots," says Catherine. "We're just robots!" says Simon) and whether it's worth going on. But he always goes on.

simon is having a bad day;

Though Simon never cries and seldom yells, it's not hard to tell what he's thinking. He is very sincere with his emotions. When he's happy, he whoops and laughs; when he's upset, he sulks, shutting down while his emotions run riot in his head. He's not very good at faking a smile, though it doesn't keep him from trying -- when he lies to Robin Bass's mockingbird about her being safe, he sounds like someone just kicked his puppy. To put it simply, Simon is great at lying to himself, but terrible at lying to others.

His inability to conceal his emotions results in passive aggression -- because he doesn't always want to express anger (but can't hide it), he tends to vent through sarcasm, bitter jokes (that aren't really jokes), and long-suffering sighs. He is also prone to being maudlin and self-pitying: for instance, while descending into the abyss with Catherine, he talks about how he doesn't see the point in going on if everyone else is dead, and that even if he makes it to the ARK, he'll have no family or friends. ("You can make new friends," Catherine offers helpfully.) This tendency to lose himself in self pity can result in him being selfish, or even mean -- he tells Catherine he doesn't understand why she'd bother to take a picture of herself "since the world is dead and no one would ever look at it."

His anger, when it does appear, is dark and terrible. He calls Catherine "disgusting" after learning they created a clone of himself to die in the ocean (a fact she explained -- and he disregarded -- multiple times before it happened) and berates her until she grows quiet and weepy. When his delusions are questioned, he's capable of great cruelty, a stark contrast to his otherwise good-natured self.

(If your sanity is hanging on by a thread, you'll punch anyone who looks like they're holding scissors.)

the last simon;

In summary, Simon is a creative, somewhat scatterbrained man who is out of his depths, who propels himself forward with both tenacity and self-delusion, who wears his heart on his sleeve (and sometimes drags others down with it), and who survives in spite of everything.

Note: Halfway through the game, Simon copies his brain chip into a new body (hence Simon-3) in order to descend deeper into the ocean. This body belongs to Raleigh Herber, and it will be the body he arrives in when he reaches Ryslig. As he transforms into a monster, he will progressively resemble his former self.
